Dappled Cities dish out their most sophisticated album yet, with ‘Zounds’ hitting stereos three years after the Sydney boys’ sophomore effort ‘Granddance’. ‘Zounds’ takes you on a lyrical journey via abrasive beats and evocative vocals. Kick back and enjoy the ride as images of lost wooden ships, towns with no name, and tree-dotted islands are brought to mind. All tracks were laid down live to capture the raw energy of art in motion, but none will give you a greater sense of elation than ‘The Price’ – it’s a political tune, but catchy and emotive with a deep orchestral backing. Not all the numbers are this upbeat however. Some linger, some brood, and some – like ‘Hold Your Back’ – are more a “collection of ideas” than mere song.
‘Zounds’ is out through Speak’n’Spell.
