Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisso, or as she is better known in the music world, Lykke Li, is a sweet softly spoken individual. While teamed with her music genre of choice, alternative rock mashed with sugar coated pop-electronica an advantage is reached, where as on a crackling phone, not so much. Cream chats with the Swedish songstress to talk about her new album, working on film soundtrack albums, and the turmoils of touring.
HEYA LYKKI. IT SEEMS YOU EXPLORED ROMANTICISED NOTIONS OF LOVE IN YOUR PREVIOUS ALBUM. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS EXPLORED ON THE NEW ALBUM ‘WOUNDED RHYMES’?
It’s drums, it’s hammers. It’s like if you take the road leading down south into a darker space… The new album deals with some separation and something lost. Not so much romantic, but still on the subject of love of some sort.
AND THE TALK AROUND TOWN IS THAT YOU HAD A BIT OF AN ISSUE DURING THE WRITING PROCESS. WHAT HAPPENED?
Well I’d been touring non-stop for two and a half years I didn’t have time to sleep in the same bed for a week, so I was exhausted. I like doing shows but I don’t like having to sleep on a bus and being away all the time. I don’t really have one home, and I miss my friends and loved ones.
BUT I GUESS YOU GET TO MAKE NEW MATES WITH ALL THE COLLABORATIVE OPPORTUNITIES YOU GET. WHO’S BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE?
Bjorn [of Peter, Bjorn & John] who helped produce the album. He’s very talented, very intelligent, and yet very harsh. He likes no bullshit.
AND YOU ALSO WORKED ON THE ‘TWILIGHT’ SAGA SOUNDTRACK.
They approached me and I got to see the whole movie without music. Then they told me what it [the scene] was about, and asked me ‘So, would you want to write something for this scene?’ I said yes and started writing for that small scene, getting into the solemn mood. I kind of like that cult audience that comes with the ‘Twilight’ Saga so fanatic. Just being able to play my music to all those girls felt great.
ANOTHER INTERESTING TRACK OF YOURS IS YOUR COVER OF ‘KNOCKED UP’ BY KINGS OF LEON.
Well I did a remix of them so I didn’t really get to work with them but that was an honour to be asked.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR FAVOURITE SONGS TO JIG TO AT THE MOMENT?
It would be between ‘Bam Bam’ by Sister Nancy or ‘Shoop Shoop’ by Salt’N’Pepa.
