Picture a moment in music history when club culture was at its first peak; illicit substances were running rampant; musical genres bleeding for the first time; and after an onslaught of trashy disposable pop-dance tracks – thanks to chart hoggers Stock, Aitken & Waterman (think Bananarama, Bros, Kylie, errr!) clubbers finally grew tired of relentless beats and began demanding more: something fresh but with a retro bent; music with structure, melody and – if you dared to scratch the surface – maybe even a message.
That moment was 1988 and a big contingency of it was what became dubbed the ‘Manchester Movement’. The English city that was already renowned for having exported music’s moodiest band, The Smiths, and electro pioneers New Order, was now smashing out acts with a somewhat more ‘up’ sensibility including Inspiral Carpets, The Stone Roses, The Charlatans and – possibly the most famous of post-mod Mancunian exports – Happy Mondays.
Fusing the euphoric elements of acid house and rave with joyous indie guitar pop, Happy Mondays became one of the most influential UK bands of the later 20th century: so legendary an outfit that its lead singer, party-boy Shaun Ryder was constantly making it onto “guess who might bite the dust next?” lists in credible music magazines.
Alas, Mr Ryder is still with us, and his band is still going strong. In fact, they’re coming to Australia in May!
KillRockStar Big Dog Entertainment are thrilled to present for the first time in Australia, the full original lineup of Happy Mondays who’ll be performing a bevy of brilliant hits including Step On, Wrote For Luck, Loose Fit and Kinky Afro.
This is a band not to missed, one so unique in its layout, there’s even a guy whose credentials read “dance and vibes” (rather than the usual vocals, guitars or drums – hello Bez!).
See below for the band’s tour dates and venues. And we’ll see you at one of the gigs – hands in the air and smiles beaming from ear to ear.
Happy Mondays Tour Dates:
Friday 3 May Brisbane: The Tivoli
Saturday 4 May Sydney: UNSW Roundhouse
Sunday 5 May Melbourne: Palace Theatre
Wednesday 8 May Perth: Capitol
