A Malaysia Airlines plane, travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur to Perth, has been shot down over Donetsk near the Ukrainian/Russian border this morning, with all 298 passengers and crew on board being killed.

It is believed the plane was shot down by a ground-to-air missile, and that Australian officials have requested access to the crash site to begin conducting an investigation.

The eastern Ukraine site is renowned as rebel-held territory, with Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists continuing to fight in the region, but both parties deny having shot down the plane. Ukrainian president Petro Oleksiyovych Poroshenko has denied his forces were involved, instead laying blame on outside terrorists. Meanwhile, Russian president Vladimir Putin is pointing the finger at the Ukraine but he has not denied involvement by Russian separatists.

Of the passengers who perished, at least 27 have been confirmed Australian, some of whom were meant to continue on to Perth; others having planned a connecting flight from KL to Melbourne to partake in an AIDS conference being held this week in the Victorian capital.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced that he will soon be speaking with the prime minister of the Netherlands and has described the situation as “an unspeakable crime”.  Antonino Tati
