Yves Saint Laurent biopic
‘Yves Saint Laurent’, the movie, is an epic odyssey of creation, love, glamour and fashion, and gives viewers insight into the mind and life of one of the greatest visionary designers of our time. The film (that is currently on every fashionista’s lips) unveils the life of the titular French fashion designer, from his career beginning at age 21 years, when he was called upon to run one of the world’s great fashion houses – Dior.
In a nutshell, the biopic is stylish but never too heavily stylised. It’s also typically French in the way that it doesn’t apologise for the quieter – if not, duller – moments throughout, like scenes in kitchens where Parisian dandies sit chatting about, well, next to nothing.
That said, halfway through the movie, things do pick up, reflecting the faster, more risque change in direction of the designer himself – not just taking bigger risks in fashion, but living a headier, rockier life amid international fashion circuits outside of traditional Paris.
If you love fashion, you’ll j’adore this. If you don’t care much for it, save your cinema money for something with big effects or at least less hoity-toity. Antonino Tati
‘Yves Saint Laurent’ is still screening in select independent cinemas.
It will be out on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital on November 5 through eOne Home Entertainment.
