Australia’s greatest garage sale

No matter how much second-hand selling might be on the increase online (thank you, eBay), nothing beats a good old-fashioned garage sale. Indeed, the concept of selling from your own front- or backyard is still a phenomena in Australia that there’s even an annual national event called the ‘Garage Sale Trail’ held each October.

A not-for-profit community and sustainability campaign, Garage Sale Trail encourages reuse of pre-loved items. The idea is simple – garage sales are held on the same day around Australia and the combined impact of keeping hundreds of thousands of items from landfill is extraordinary.

It’s free to get involved and registration is open to all residential homes, local businesses, schools, community groups, cultural institutions, charities and anyone who’s up for a day of fun (and a bit of moolah-making).

Whether you’re a potential seller who wants to spring-clean the home, or a buyer on the hunt for some retro bargains – or indeed, just want to get to know the neighbours as well as ‘do your bit’ for the environment – the Garage Sale Trail is for you.  Lisa Andrews
