Indian cricket team banned from eating spices

Following news last November that England’s cricket team were upping the ante on gourmet (read: rich) dishes in their diet, including such specialties as “piri-piri breaded tofu with tomato salsa”, “mungbean curry with spinach” and “Moroccan spiced griddled chicken fillets”, India has swung the bat the other way and placed a total ban on spices in its cricket players’ diets.
Yep, the country most famous for its spices – including the likes of turmeric, cumin, mustard, and a host of curries – is calling it quits on all that is hot and spicy when it comes to feeding its cricketers.
One Indian newspaper featured a cover story with the headline ‘Naan-sense’, playing on the sad fact that plain bread was okay to consume but spices were a no-no.
Whether the spice ban will give the Indian team an edge over the others we’re not too sure. One thing we can say is that the Brits might be a bit paranoid next time they dip their pistachio and ginger biscotti into porcelain cups of chai. Antonino Tati
