Golden Globes award a lot of kooky movies and off-kilter telly

While there were a few serious contenders in this year’s Golden Globe nominations – and we mean serious in the sense of ‘drama/melodrama/so-much-so-it-hurts’ stuff like took-12-years-to-make Boyhood and story-of-Stephen-Hawkins-life The Theory of Everything… there were plenty of nods to given to good ol’ fashioned comedy and kookiness.

The Grand Budapest Hotel scored a trophy for the category of Best Comedy or Musical, while Michael Keaton won Best Actor for his kooky role in Birdman.

Meanwhile, twisted TV series Transparent took home the award for Best Comedy in Television, up against the darker likes of Silicon Valley and Orange Is The New Black. Actor Jeffrey Tambor also won Best Actor for his role in Transparent.

A little known gem from Latin America, telenovela Jane the Virgin saw Gina Rodriguez win Best Actress in a Comedy Series, beating out the veteran likes of Edie Falco in Nurse Jackie and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Veep.

Even the ‘drama’ nominations for film and TV were far-flung left in essence, namely The Imitation GameNightcrawlerCake and St Vincent on the filmic front, and House Of CardsHouse of Lies,American Horror Story: Freakshow and Fargo in TV land.

One thing’s for certain: movies and television are getting stranger and stranger – twisted, warped and all – and audiences are lapping the kookiness up.  Lisa Andrews
