THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

Could this be Australia’s new national anthem?

Straya still 680 @2x

Forget Icehouse’s Great Southern Land or gangGAJANG’s This Is Australia. The new Australian national anthem could well be in the form of a pisstake (top of story) by a dude calling himself ‘Coach Bombay’.

Otherwise known as Terry Mann on his birth certificate, the Melbourne-based musician has created a hilarious parody video that uses the melodies of the popular OutKast song Hey Ya but laces it with lyrics and pictures typical of Australia.

The fact that the song is actually titled Straya should hint to you this guy’s not in it for an OAM, or OBE for that matter. Still, some online citizen journos are saying that the clip could become our next tourism ad.

In the clip, images of Midnight Oil are juxtaposed with The Wiggles; a Kylie Minogue video cuts to images of Indigenous folk dancing; cute land animal pics are interlaced with shots of vicious sea-life; dudes playing backyard cricket cut to girls in bikinis with water guns… Plus there are obligatory shots of lammies, Vegemite jars, boomerangs, the Big Banana, the Giant Pineapple, all the usual suspects…

We must say, it is very funny. One hilarious part of the rap section includes the lyric: “You think you got, ooh you think you got it” (shots of Paris, New York). “But have you got a rock where there is nothing at all-all-all-all?” (cut to humble shot of Ayers Rock).

And that, my friends, pretty much sums up the hype of this ‘great’, ‘big’ brown land of ours.  Antonino Tati
