Ready for a bit of the ol’ ultra-violence
Some gamers seem to have way too much time on their hands. But when they come up with scenes for one of the world’s most popular video games, inspired by one of cinema history’s coolest art-house flicks, we say go for gold in whiling away the hours mashing postmodern references…
The streets of fictional Los Santos get a major overhaul in Grand Theft Auto Online, incorporating simulated backdrops from Stanley Kubrick’s classic cinematic thriller A Clockwork Orange. Indeed not only have creators done a superb job in reimagining the sets, propers and general mis-en-scene, virtually frame-by-frame, they’ve splendidly incorporated good chunks of the original music, dialogue and action.

Grand Theft Auto players are, by default, fond of a bit of the ol’ ultra-violence, so it comes as no surprise that the film the very word first appeared in has become a main source of inspiration for the popular gaming series’ latest online instalment.
With characters dressed in bleached white threads and trademark bowler hats, their eyes heavily lined with kohl, carrying baseball bats as primary weapons, this game deserves some kind of award for excellent ‘costuming’ and ‘makeup’ alone.
Suffice to say, it’s GTA to a tee, and a sure sign that these talented game creators – nay, film recreators – will be delivering more awesome material when the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V hits stores in March. Antonino Tati
