No longer static: a new start for Colette Carr

For pop music fans, it’s been worth the wait for a new EP by Colette Carr. Titled Static. Start, the EP includes four tracks, the lead single Static, along with Moments In Love, Three Percent and Walking In Place, each inspired by a song Killswitch from Colette’s previous album Skitszo Collection.
For the EP, Colette teamed up with songwriter-producer FrankMusik, whom she worked with on Killswitch. Cream contributor Gemma Maddox caught up with 24-year-old singer to find out what influenced the songs this time around…
Hello Colette. Let talk about how amazing your new EP Static. Start. is. I love the direction you’ve gone in. What influenced you to try something different?
I wanted to push myself and get outside of my comfort zone. A song from my previous album Killswitch was kind of the driving force behind the inspiration for Static. Start. I still love that song as much as I did when I first recorded it, I wanted to make more music that would withstand the test of time. And ADHD!
What was the creative writing and recroding process like?
Creatively, the recording process was all over the place. I could not seem to pick a sound or a direction until I decided to break some of the “writing rules” I had been following for so long. That’s when the whole album started to fall into place. I think I had to make a bunch of music that wasn’t right before I could decide where I wanted to live musically. I went on the iHeart Radio tour as sort of an intermission during the recording process, toured the new songs; and I came back with so much more insight and confidence in my decisions. FrankMusik and I always have a really cool flow in the studio, we are pretty good about keeping the energy bouncing between us and off the walls of that tiny studio. It’s a very safe zone, so we were able to take our time and try, try, try, before we really honed in and focused on a “sound”.
Obviously you enjoyed working with FrankMusik again?
I thought that when we worked together again it would feel like “just yesterday”, but it didn’t. He and I had both grown so much as people and artists, and it was far beyond what it used to be. I felt very understood by him. He had already been through a lot of what I was going through, so he knew exactly how far he could push me.

What does the title Static. Start. mean to you?
Static. represents where my head was at; lost in a cloud of white noise and of clutter confusion and other people’s opinions. And the Start. part is me escaping that cloud and thinking for myself in a very clear conscience and confident way. This is my new start.
What is your favourite karaoke song?
I usually go up on a dare and sing whatever my friends choose for me, whether I know it or not – and I usually don’t! I don’t think anybody should be good at karaoke; it’s strictly for embarrassing yourself.
When you’re not in the studio and working on music what do you like to do?
I love to paint! I’ve been painting a lot; there’s paint everywhere, even in my promo photos. LOL.
What is your most used Emoji?
✨ Because you can never have too much sparkle.
This is a very important question. When are you coming to Australia so we can hang out and eat Mint Choc Chip ice-cream while spotting kangaroos.
I’m not sure yet, but that sounds perfect!
