8 inventive ways to capture your gap year memories

The gap year is one of those periods of your life on which you will look back in fondness, and there have never been more ways to capture the memories. From human-free Idyllic islands to Times Square on New Year’s Eve, the excitement of 12 months (or longer, if you’re very lucky) won’t ever be completely recreated – but here are eight ways to try:
GoPro
Still the first and only micro video gadget for many ‘prosumers’, and capable of startling results in the most testing conditions. The new GoPro Hero 4 Session is a stripped down, if pricey, option but the best way of filming snowing, swimming, diving, driving, or any other high octane activity.

Phone case
Remember when you were sitting on that white sand with a cocktail and the world was just perfect, and your camera was stuck in your hotel and you didn’t want to move? Luckily you had your mobile phone. You snapped the picture in 20mpx of a perfect moment in life, and then realised back home, several months later, that you’d like to carry that moment with you on the back of the device that captured it. Get it here.

Blog
For compiling memories, photographically and editorially, and showcasing your talents for any potential employers and friends/fans down the line. An online journal is good for gathering thoughts and clarifying plans, and also fun to re-read when you arrive back to put yourself back in the mind of you aged several months, years or decades younger.
Canvas
Customised canvases have been around for some time now, both in giant size and little portrait pieces. Collages are attractive as long as they do not become too busy – that Vietnamese temple and Californian cliff faces need to be BIG – while another striking option is a collection of several canvases that combine into a bigger picture.
Mural
If canvas doesn’t do the job, then how about an image from the trek that fills an entire wall? Imagine seeing that Thai sunset in almost life-size, or the snow in Lapland blanketing an entire wall. That’s your wall, and your life.

Calendar
Nothing will make you yearn for wanderlust more than saying, “this time last year I was in a jungle/volunteering in Africa/interning in the US”. Create an online calendar that tallies up with whatever life-changing escapade you experienced 12 months previously, and start plotting the next chapter in your life for later. Count down the months.
Personalised words print or poster
Many homes have prints of famous quotations or sayings from writers, sportsmen, musicians, politicians or other motivational figures. You could follow that trend, or perhaps you’ll meet someone on your gap year – a fellow backpacker, a tour guide, a student – who says something that really sticks with you. Not only will you read it, but you’ll hear it in your mind as well.
Mini documentary
We’ve already established that the iPhone, GoPro and blog are great methods for making sure memories don’t disappear. But why not take it a stage further and plan a small documentary for when you get back? A creative, interesting work will be a beautiful memory, good for your website and social media presence, and one which you could play on a digital frame forever when back home.
