People of Perth paying too much?
While it oughtn’t be something to be particularly proud of, Perth ranks alonside New York, Paris and Tokyo as being one of the most expensive cities in the world.
According to goods-pricing-comparison website, Numbeo, Perth consumers are paying mining-boom prices for many goods and services despite a slowing economy and lack of boom-time wages.
Observations reveal that even Perth’s so-called “inexpensive” restaurants are anything but. A meal for two people in a mid-range restaurant (three-course meal), on average costs AUD$100 in Perth, close to AUD$115 in New York. A third of a litre of Coke or Pepsi, meanwhile, costs on average $3.19 in Perth compared to $2.71 in New York. While Australians’ one-time favourite beverage, beer, costs $6.18 for 500ml in Perth (domestic beer, see Market Food Prices chart below) compared to $2.56 in NYC.
Perthites have been fortunate in the area of transport, however, with the average price of petrol in Perth being the lowest in the country last year, and the city’s people have also saved on the cost of local produce. Antonino Tati
