RIP George Martin: legendary Beatles producer has died, aged 90

Infamous music producer George Martin, also known as the “fifth Beatle”, died today, aged 90.

A statement from his manager, Adam Sharp, read: “The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers and messages of support. In a career that spanned seven decades, George Martin was an inspiration to many and is recognised globally as one of music’s most creative talents. He was a true gentleman to the end.”

Martin was responsible for producing some of the Beatles’ best work, from their early pop songs right through to the psychedelic epic that is Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Indeed, so prolific was Martin in audio production, he was involved in the making of some 700-plus records over the course of his life.

Tributes are already flowing through online media, including one from Beatles drummer Ringo Starr who broke the news on Twitter this afternoon.
