Dolce & Gabbana’s new fridges for Smeg are brilliant works of art

Fashion houses can go either way with their designs – all clean and minimalist, catering to those who like the simpler things in life, or all-out flamboyant, throwing subtlety right out the window.
Leave it to Sicilian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to opt for the latter aesthetic in a new collection of fridges, commissioned to the pair by luxury kitchen appliance brand, Smeg, and reflecting the colour and splendour of their recent 2016 collections.
Forget “white goods” for your kitchen for a moment, and imagine a fridge decorated from top to foot in glorious hand-painted sceneries of specific Sicilian heritage.
The designers were literally given carte blanche by Italian appliances brand Smeg to produce 100 limited-edition ‘FAB28’ refrigerators, all of which are hand-painted by artists specially commissioned by Dolce and Gabbana themselves.

Design motifs include men in military garb, marionettes, and the famous ‘Trinacria’ symbol which represents the triangular form of the island of Sicily.
Suffice to say, the spectacular designs are not for those looking for a boring beige tone in the kitchen… Oh, and as for the cost, each of these 100 limited edition fridges won’t go out the door for less than $34,000. Versace would be green, red and gold with envy. Antonino Tati
