Ermahgerd! Brand new Avalanches single is finally here…

What’s happened in the past decade and a half?
The Apple iPod, iPhone and iPad, HD DVR, YouTube, Madonna’s loss of cred, 9/11, Nintendo Wii, Amazon Kindle, self-publishing, a black president in the US, Google Glass, an unhealthy fascination with the Kardashians, the food truck phenomenon, TV streaming, the hoverboard, unnattractive activewear, marriage equality debate, a decline in quality Top 40 tunes…
What’s not happened in the past decade and a half?
An Avalanches album.
Well set your alarms for July 8, folks, because Australia’s oddest sample-meisters will unleash their new LP Wildflower then.
It’s been a super-long tease, and let’s hope the album is as awe-inspiring and awesome as their perennial debut Since I Left You.
Perhaps it’s taken 16 years for the guys to get copyright clearance on umpteen tracks, assuming they’ve taken the sample-laden approach across the board (please say yes).
All we know is that first single off it, the daftly titled Frankie Sinatra, is a sign of brilliant things to come (loving the interpolation of My Favourite Things from ‘The Sound Of Music’ already).
The song is instantly catchy in a daft but cred way; a mish-mash of mock urban, hip-hop, pop, calypso, fife and brass. Stupifying and splendid all at once.
With the album described by the band as “a mind-bending cartoon road movie that’s best viewed with closed eyes and an open mind”, we await as instructed with peepers shut tight, noggin wide open, and, yes, bated breath. Antonino Tati
‘Wonderland’ is out July 8.
