At least 50 people have been shot dead, and another 50 injured in a horrific mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
At approximately 2am, US east coast time, a heavily armed gunman opened fire at patrons in the Pulse nightclub, instantly killing the majority of patrons.
Police stormed the club, but only after a three-hour stand-off, and firing grenades and shots whilst doing so. Police killed the gunman, but, of around 100 patrons who were in the venue, only half survived and the majority of survivors were injured.
President Barack Obama has called it “the worst mass shooting” in US history, offering his condolences to the LGBTI community and families in mourning.
Said the President: “This is a sobering reminder that attacks on any American, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation, is an attack on all of us, and on the fundamental values of equality and dignity that define us as a country.”
Hillary Clinton also offered her support to the LGBTI community, condemning the shooting as a major hate crime.
Donald Trump, on the other hand, took the opportunity to tweet that he was “right” about the threats of terrorism.
Just prior to the shooting, the gunman had reportedly made a call to 911, randomly bringing up his “association” with ISIS.
The gunman was 29-year-old Omar Mateen, reportedly a security official himself. Antonino Tati
