It’s never a good sign when the words ‘celebrity’ and ‘reality show’ are used in the same sentence. Usually they are swiftly followed by other words like ‘disaster’, ‘train-wreck’ and ‘has-been’. Like other fading and faded luminaries before her (Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, the Osbournes, Gene Simmons and family), Mariah Carey is putting her life – in all it’s tacky glory – on show for that most niche of audiences: the newly lobotomised.
Judging by the trailer, Mariah’s World will mainly feature our star lounging on various types of furniture. In fact, what is most striking about the trailer (other than Mariah’s face) is that the show appears to be hermetically sealed within Mariah’s home(s). Surely some fresh air would liven up the proceedings? But let’s not be too quick to judge. I’m sure we will see Carey out and about: being chauffeured to various plastic surgeons, beauticians, hair stylists and the like.
What could be more compelling than watching an ageing pop star hang on to her last shreds of her fame? Well, the answer is pretty much anything else. And it seems like her fiance James Packer agrees with us. He has wisely stayed out of the trailer, and hopefully for his sake, has stayed out of the show itself.
When it comes to car crashes, people often can’t look away. And for Mariah’s World, this compulsion holds equally true. I could say ‘don’t watch’, but I know better. But do watch at your own risk. Chris Prindiville
