The Parkes Elvis Festival is an annual event that takes place in Central New South Wales during the second week of January, to coincide with Elvis Presley’s birthday.
The town of Parkes has a population of just over 12,000 and is located 365 kilometres west of Sydney. Come January, the town makes room for a further 22,000 people prepare to shake, rattle and roll their way across a five-day Elvis extravaganza.
From Wednesday 11 – Sunday 15 January 2017, next year’s Parkes Elvis Festival celebrates its 25th birthday with the biggest Viva Las Vegas party Australia has ever seen. Indeed, the theme for the 2017 is the 1964 Elvis film ‘Viva Las Vegas’. Think hot rods, neon lights, rhinestones and feathered showgirls as one of NSW’s most vibrant regional communities transforms into a glittering paradise to celebrate their special milestone year.
There’ll be marching bands, Elvis look-a-like and sound-a-like contests, dancing competitions, busking, tribute acts, ’50s-style food stalls, Vegas-style celebrants (for couples who wanna say ‘I do’), even ‘Elvis Gospel Services’ and official Parkes Elvis merchandise.
So dust off that shiny suit (guys) and roll up your bobby socks (girls), then book a trip to Parkes for a rockin’ and rollin’ time. Michael Mastess
The Parkes Elvis Festival is on from January 11-15, 2017.
