Songwriter Bruce Roberts has reportedly reached out to Madonna to cover his classic single Enough Is Enough in response to the current climate in US politics and the draconian actions of President Donald Trump.
Originally written for and sung by Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer, the song re-entered the Billboard Dance Club Chart at number 6 on Friday, albeit in a remixed ‘stripped-down’ guise.
Roberts has proposed that Madonna rewrite and sing the lyrics in a stylised form that expresses disdain for Trump’s backward policies, insisting this isn’t a personal attack on the president but rather a statement that the direction he is taking the U.S. in is the wrong one, politically and culturally.
If the song’s re-recording goes ahead, Roberts would like to keep some of the original Streisand and Summer vocals intact, adding new lyrics to be sung by Madonna, whose voice will also be added to the harmonies.
A song often played as a stance for women’s and LGBTQ rights, Enough Is Enough is currently being used in shows at Perth’s Fringe World, most notably as a finale number in a production by radical performance art group, Briefs. Antonino Tati
