The Australian Music Prize recognises sonic creators in the country who have gone against the grain of traditional, typical songwriting.
This year’s award and cash prize of $30,000 was presented to rap duo AB Original at a ceremony on Thursday night held at Melbourne’s Toff In Town.
AB Original’s radical LP Reclaim Australia has been popular on radio and in the charts over the past 12 months, and makes reference to current issues of Australia’s national identity, the flag-changing debate, and the contemplation of changing the date of Australia Day to something more suitable, as well as, of course, issues concerning indigenous communities.
The Australian Music Prize remains an authentic recognition of local songwriting talent, and this year’s selection of nominations was a reflection of the current diversity in Australian music – from rock to pop, country to blues. Also featured in the nominations were The Avalanches, Big Scary, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Antonino Tati
