Eyes on the prize

LGBTI Awards 2018 cream magazine @2x

With 2017 drawing to a close, the award season is about to kick off.

One of the ceremonies that is sure to bring the glitz and glamour this coming season is the 2018 Australian LGBTI Awards.

This year, over 6,000 people were nominated from across 16 categories, including Celebrity of the Year, Sports Personality of the Year, Ally, Brand and Marketing Campaign, Community Initiative/Charity and Inspirational Role Model.

Courtney Act, Conchita Wurst, Hugo Weaving, Chrstine Anu, and The Veronicas are just some of the names nominated for Australia’s biggest awards dedicated to celebrating the LGBTI community and their allies. And there’s one or two anomalies in there, too, with even shock jock Kyle Sandilands up for an award – believe it or not!

There are two main groups to the awards, the Public Award Category and the Corporate Award Category. The Public Award categories are entirely decided by public vote, while the Corporate categories will be voted on by an esteemed judging panel that includes Les Girls legend Carlotta, Broadcaster Julie McCrossin, SBS Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Michael Ebeid, LGBTI Activist and Model Ollie Henderson, Disability Discrimination Commissioner Alistair McEwin, and PwC Australia Partner Suzi Russell-Gilford.

In what has been a rough year for the LGBTI community – as well as one with a few key successes – this opportunity to come together and celebrate comes at just the right time.  Chris Prindiville

The 2018 Australian LGBTI Awards takes place on Friday 2 March, 2018 at The Star, Sydney.
