Getting by with a little help from a Beatles classic
When it comes to recording a cover version, picking a Beatles tune can be a risky thing. Quite simply, you’ve really got to get it right when you’re treading on sacred Beatles turf. But if that cover version is going to be recorded by some 29 artists, there’s plenty of opportunity to pass the buck if the track doesn’t work out.
Fortunately for Sony Music’s All Stars, no buck need be passed, since their brand new recording of the Fab Four’s classic single ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ is actually very, very good.
Right from the choral-like intro right through to the multi-vocal clap-happy climax, the track is catchy as.
Taking turns delivering a lyric here, a punchy line there, are (drum roll, please): Olivia Newton-John, Josh Pyke, Guy Sebastian, Justice Crew, Anthony Callea, Samantha Jade, Delta Goodrem, David Campbell, Daryl Braithwaite, John Farnham, and many other Sony staples.
The best bit is the song’s been released for a good cause, with proceed from the single going towards the Sony Foundation which funds life-changing programs for young people with special needs, who may be battling cancer, or those that have been marginalised from society (See the Friends4Youth campaign of which even uber-cool outfit Foo Fighter have good things to say about the Foundation).
