2018 will be the time to celebrate at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, with the iconic event turning the big 4-0.

To celebrate this milestone, the Festival program is bigger, bolder, better – and more fabulous than ever – as it reflects on four decades of amazing evolution, momentous achievements and extraordinary individuals.

Over seventeen sparkling days (starting February 16), festival-goers will be treated to a jam-packed line-up of parties, live performances, exhibitions, family and community events, plus the jewel in the crown, the show-stopping Mardi Gras Parade.

In this special anniversary year, the 2018 Festival will focus on the theme ‘40 YEARS OF EVOLUTION’, which will involve telling the story of how a small-scale street protest turned into one of the world’s biggest street parties.

One of the highlights for next year is sure to be Trevor Ashley’s Mardi Gala, a variety gala that is part concert, part chat show, but all fun! And for those after something a bit more physical, there is always the Pool Party, where you can make a splash in style.

But let’s not forget the main event, the Mardi Gras Parade, which in its 40th year looks set to be the best yet, with its jaw-dropping costumes and floats sure to get revellers in the right party mood.

40 years in, and those good times show no sign of stopping.  Chris Prindiville
