One trick that salesmen often use is they ask you what type of monthly payment you are looking for. This is tricky because once you give them a number, they then know what types of vehicles to show you, but this may not be in your best interest.

You do not want to focus so much on the monthly payment. Of course, you do need to know what it is you can afford monthly, but keep it in the back of your mind and enjoy looking at the vehicles available and their options.


Allow Time For a Test Drive

Another common pitfall that many people make is that they do not do a thorough test drive of the vehicle they are interested in. Often times, the dealership will allow you to drive the vehicle in a small area, but this is not enough time to really get a feel for the vehicle.

If you are truly interested in the vehicle you are about to test drive, you should ask to drive it for a longer amount of time. Remember, this will be the vehicle you drive daily, and you want it to be the perfect fit.

A good, long test drive is ideal and do not be afraid to ask for one, especially with a used vehicle. You need to feel comfortable with the vehicle and ensure that it meets your needs.


Always Go with Your Gut

Remember to go with your gut at all times and only make a decision when you are ready. If you feel that you are being pressured into a sale, take a moment to step back and evaluate the situation. You are not obligated to sign any contracts or paperwork.

The above pitfalls are the most common, but with some research, knowledge, and preparation, you can avoid them when you step into the dealership.
