Eighties teen film favourite The Breakfast Club has been in the news this week due to lead actress Molly Ringwald stating her piece about what she thought was ‘wrong’ with the movie.
In her ever-so articulate manner, Ringwald wrote in The New Yorker, “I thought about [the film] again, after a number of women came forward with sexual-assault accusations against the producer Harvey Weinstein, and the #MeToo movement gathered steam. If attitudes toward female subjugation are systemic, and I believe that they are, it stands to reason that the art we consume and sanction plays some part in reinforcing those same attitudes.”
Ringwald referred to some of the sexist characters in the film, along with traditional stereotypes but added that she’s still very proud of The Breakfast Club and that “conversations about them will change”.
“It’s up to the following generations to figure out how to continue those conversations and make them their own — to keep talking, in schools, in activism and art — and trust that we care.”
We fully agree. But none of those words will make us regret in admitting that The Breakfast Club still stands as one of the best teen movies ever made. So we’re glad Dendy Cinemas is screening the classic flick across all its locations on Monday 30th April. That means screenings at Dendy’s Canberra, Newtown and Coorparoo locations.
Dendy Cinema-goers can attend a 6:30pm session with a complimentary beverage on arrival and packet of crisps. With tickets at just $15 for a Club Dendy ticket or $18 for everyone else, you’re all on Dendy detention!
Oh, and patrons can now book online to secure their seats, so as to skip the queues! Lisa Andrews
