‘Bewitched’ to get a TV reboot; will boast a bi-racial couple as its leads
TV reboots are a dime a dozen these days. Well, they cost a few more million to make than that, but there are so many out there, it can be hard to keep up with.
We’ve had classic films turned into successful series (eg: Fargo, Clueless, Scream, Psycho into Bates Motel), and movies whose telly transfer wasn’t so successful (eg: The Exorcist, and Damian which fed off the original Omen movie).
Then there are reboots of TV shows themselves, which ought to feel more comfortable on the medium they originated in, but often fall flat second time ’round (Dallas, Dynasty, Gilmour Girls and definitely Roseanne).
Sure to work very well as a reboot is Bewitched, which has been given the green light for a pilot to be produced by ABC Studios and Sony Pictures Television.
In this ‘Bewitched’, an African-American Samantha will be marrying a mortal white Darren, which is sure to get gender and race studies analysts into a tizz.
Based on the premise of the original Bewitched which aired from 1964 to 1972 and starred Elizabeth Montgomery as a nose-twinkling magic fixer-upper and her bumbling but somehow successful husband, the new version will also be a half-hour comedy but will see the story featuring a bi-racial couple.
You might recall the series was adapted into a film in 2005 starring Nicole Kidman as Samantha and Will Ferrell as Darren.
As for who will be stepping into the characters’ shoes for the reboot, we haven’t been told yet but we do know an African-American Samantha will be marrying a mortal white Darren, which is sure to get gender and race studies analysts into a tizz.
As they say in TV land, stay tuned. Antonino Tati
