Disney in strife for alleged gender pay gap; is sued in class action

Disney often presents its princesses in the most fortunate of lights, but when it comes to rewarding its female staff, it seems the story-telling giant comes up short.

According to Variety, a class action law firm is suing the Walt Disney Company this week, alleging that the company systematically underpays its female employees.

San Francisco-based law firm, Andrus Anderson LLP, is seeking to represent all women who have been employed by Walt Disney Studios in California since 2015.

A Disney spokesman has denied the allegations, saying the lawsuit is without merit and that the Walt Disney Company “will defend against it vigorously”.

Andrus Anderson LLP insists Disney’s corporate policies have a discriminatory effect on women, including some pay gaps that exist between men and women who perform the same work.

It is expected that if the class action is successful, other parties could sue their respective production houses and that Hollywood, in general, will need to tighten up its act in the area of equal pay.
