Robert De Niro to be honoured with the Screen Actors Guild ‘Life Achievement’ award

Veteran actor Robert De Niro will be honoured with a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Life Achievement award early next year.

The legendary actor, whose films include Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, American Hustle, Casino, and most recently Joker, will be honoured with SAG’s highest accolade on January 19, 2020 at an event to take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

De Niro has been nominated for many awards in the past, including Oscar nominations for his starring roles in Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Cape Fear, Awakenings and Silver Linings Playbook. He has won Academy Awards for his intense performances in Raging Bull and The Godfather II.

The actor has also jumped on the Netflix wagon, starring in The Irishman alongside Al Pacino, Anna Paquin, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel in a film directed by Martin Scorcese.

Says De Niro, “I have been a member of this union [SAG] for over 50 years; it’s an honour to receive this award.”

Also a staunch activist, Robert De Niro joined the anti-fracking campaign Artists Against Fracking in 2012. During the 2016 US presidential campaign, he was an outspoken critic of Republican candidate Donald Trump, calling him “blatantly stupid” and saying, “He wants to punch people in the face?! I’d like to punch him in the face”.

Then, in June last year, while introducing a performance by Bruce Springsteen at the Tony Awards, De Niro brought the audience to a standing ovation with this denunciation of President Trump, stating: I’m gonna say one thing: Fuck Trump. It’s no longer ‘down with Trump’. It’s ‘fuck Trump.”

And that, friends, deserves its own award.
