THE NEW RETRO-MODERN

Fashionistas are sure to go Gaga over the new trailer for ‘House of Gucci’

I’m going gaga over the fact Lady Gaga is set to star in the fashion biopic House of Gucci, and I’m hardly what you’d call a “little monster”. So I can imagine how eager the star’s avid fans are to see it. And after the massive success of A Star Is Born, millions of other non-little monsters are probably keen to see if Gaga can cut the mustard in relaying as meaty a tale as the Gucci family’s.

Directed by Ridley (Bladerunner) Scott, the film is inspired by the shocking true story of the (big, huge, mafia-like) family empire behind the famed Italian fashion house.

House of Gucci will span “three decades of love, betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately murder”, so who better to star in the film than style-indulgent Gaga who will no doubt gleam alongside Hollywood luminaries Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons and Jack Huston. The two Gs in her name alone give great alliteration on the film posters.

Gaga plays Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted in 1998 of ordering the murder of Gucci head, Maurizio Gucci. Reggiani was released from prison in 2014.

Adam Driver plays Maurizio Gucci, Jared Leto stars as Paolo Gucci, Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci, Jack Huston as business mogul Domenico De Sole, Salma Hayek as Maurizio’s ex-wife Giuseppina “Pina” Auriemma (who allegedly ordered the hit on her ex-husband), and Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci. That’s a lot of Guccis to keep up with and then there’s the godparents’ families! (It’s an Italian thing).

The first trailer for the film has just dropped but we must say some of it is a little disconcerting.

We love the strains of Blondie in its soundtrack, are impressed by its star-studded cast, and think it’s a slick cut-and-paste of the flick so far, but one annoying thing is you can hardly make out what Gaga is saying in her voiceover. Her accent is odd – sounding more wannabe French than fluid Italian – and the words are pretty muffled. Not a good look to kick things off and strange, since Gaga is of Italian decent herself.

Still, with a cast this stellar and a story this notorious – we see how far a family will go in the name of fortune and control – House of Gucci could turn out to be fashion’s Ben-Hur.

‘House of Gucci’ is scheduled for release November 25th.
