Ethique: hygiene and cleaning products that truly are good for the environment
Eco-consciousness has gotten to the point where just about everything we use in our homes comes with the thought of “where will the packaging for this product end up?” And it’s a great thing for the environment that we are now thinking about the carbon footprint we leave behind, and are actually doing something to lessen this.
One brand that aims to have all bases covered in the home is Ethique – a company that started out in a small kitchen in New Zealand back in 2012 and is now taking the world by storm.
Ethique’s mission was a simple one: to recycle old plastic bottles by filling these up with powerful concentrates available in the form of small soaps.
Ethique now sell everything from gentle face cleansers to bodywash concentrates; multipurpose kitchen and bathroom concentrates to shampoo and conditioning bars. And each bar is as beautifully packaged as it is minimal.

Just one fragment of the extensive product range by Ethique the Curly Hair Range!
The fact is that traditionally packaged cleaning and hygiene products leave a huge carbon footprint – they’re big, bulky and with packaging that sometimes ends up in landfill.
Did you know 95 percent of the content of hygiene and cleaning products we use is water? Which causes heaps of dramas when transported: from factory to shop to our individual homes.
Haircare and beauty bars, such as those created by Ethique, require less storage space, fuel to transport, and fuss. Plus, it feels good to be part of the process of whipping up the stuff in your own home (ie: just add water).
Each bar is highly concentrated and designed to last three to six times longer than bottled alternatives. In fact, the company insists on following four criteria for every ingredient used: they mustn’t have any health risks associated with their use; they must be sustainably produced and biodegradable; they must be plant-based and cruelty-free; and they must be free from palm oil.
Now, the brand’s future is looking as bright as the environment’s, with Time magazine having included Ethique products in its 100 Best Inventions of 2020 list.
And the products work as well as, if not better than, traditionally bottled products. The hand wash smells divine and even gets rid of hard grime; the kitchen cleaner concentrates need a couple of rounds with the sponge but eventually get benchtops as clean as traditional products do (better for wooden tops than granite tops); and the face and body bars work wonders, leaving skin looking clean and feeling fresh.
And let’s not forget about all the packaging being saved. So far, Ethique have helped prevent 15 million plastic bottles from being made and disposed of with their clever little bars. And the variety of bars appears never-ending with new ones on the market every couple of weeks.
