THE NEW RETRO-MODERN

New Year, New You: the easier way to better health and wellbeing with collagen peptides

The holidays are a time for long overdue catchups, get-togethers with friends, plenty of eating and probably lots of drinking. With so much going on (and going in!) it’s no wonder that by the end of it all we can feel depleted, dehydrated, and in short, wrecked.

Then with New Year comes a batch of resolutions: promises we make to ourselves that we’ll do things to make us look and feel better in the weeks and months to come.

Achieving a better you doesn’t necessarily mean strenuous exercise and strict detoxing. In fact, some things can be very enjoyable in our quest for better health and beauty. Taking collagen peptides, for example, is a simple way to improving your wellbeing and it even tastes great.

Pureacol Peptides™ from Australian-based company The Collagen Co. come in the form of great-tasting collagen powders formulated to improve skin, hair, bone strength, joint and ligament movement, and even gut health.

These premium peptides are the first of their kind fully manufactured in Australia and made of 100% grass-fed, pasture-raised Australian bovine collagen.

Fun fact: Collagen makes up around one third of the protein in our bodies. Some people assume that the human body should then be able to top up its own required collagen levels, but this isn’t so easy, according to The Collagen Co. Co-founder, Izaak Woodley.

“Whilst the body can produce collagen, this process starts slowing down in our 20s,” tells Izaak. “This causes things like fine lines and wrinkles, stiff joints, brittle nails and thinning hair. Your body relies on key amino acids to produce collagen – which we get from high-protein foods – however as we age, the body becomes less efficient at utilising amino acids from the foods we eat and as a result we produce on average 1% less of our own collagen per year.”

This is where collagen peptides come into the picture.

“Taking a collagen peptides supplement works to increase the body’s collagen levels and stimulate the production of new collagen,” adds Izaak.

While collagen supplementation has been adopted by people in the northern hemisphere for a few years now, it’s taken longer for the Australian market to cotton on to its benefits. Which is kind of odd considering Australia has a huge agricultural industry, and that our cattle is healthy and ready to provide us with the good stuff that is bovine collagen.

“As Australia is a well-known epicentre for agriculture, it does seem strange that it has taken so long to have locally-produced collagen peptides,” agrees Izaak. “Collagen peptides are also commonly called hydrolysed collagen peptides, and hydrolysation is where native collagen (for example, from cow hides) go through a complex process using water and enzymes to break down the collagen into smaller peptides so that our bodies can actually digest, absorb and use the collagen.

“As a proud Australian company we wanted to be the first to offer a great product to consumers and we’re very excited to expand the offering of our world’s first Puraecol Peptides™ Australian made Collagen.”

The great thing about the product is that it’s so easy to take. Simply blend two scoops of Pure Australian Collagen to coffee, tea, or your favourite breakfast bowl or smoothie, daily, and you’ll start to see results within a few days.

“As collagen is a protein, it’s great to have it as soon as you wake so as to fuel your body with healthy nutrients for energy to start the day. We’re also very dehydrated first thing in the morning so The Collagen Co.’s delicious fruit-flavoured premium collagen powders are a great option to help you get rehydrated and to kick-start your day.”

How much collagen you should take each day depends on your own health goals but one serve a day is ideal if you want to combat fine lines and wrinkles, improve your hair and nail strength, ease joint pain, build muscle, improve gut health and get an overall energy boost.

If you can’t decide which flavour you like best, give them all a try with the new mixed flavours pack, containing 14 single serve sachets so you can take your collagen supplements with you wherever you need to go.

Every morning, I myself enjoy a glass of juice with two scoops of The Collagen Co’s Pureacol Peptides followed by a bowl of collagen granola clusters – which I must say are rather delicious. But it makes me wonder, can a person ingest too much collagen?

“Collagen is very safe to consume,” tells Izaak encouragingly. “We recommend taking a minimum of 10 grams a day – and the upper limit would be 30 grams. This is more than enough to receive the therapeutic benefits of hydrolysed collagen – such as glowing skin and luscious hair – so there’s no need to overdo it!”

Together with quality sleep and good hygiene habits, taking collagen peptides regularly should have you looking and feeling better in the the new year and beyond.
