Smash Hits: Pet Shop Boys release colossal 3CD and 6LP compilation sets

Always very clever with their diction, the new Pet Shop Boys 55-song compilation goes by the simple title of Smash. The name came about likely because many of their singles have indeed been hits, plus the word is a wink-wink to when singer Neil Tennant was once a music writer for pop magazine Smash Hits.
Spanning a 35-year period between 1985 and 2020, ‘Smash’ works chronologically to showcase the duo’s prolific music output, opening with their debut hit ‘West End Girls’ and joyfully meandering toward 2020’s ‘Monkey Business’ (with a couple of tear-jerkers peppered throughout).
After taking their ‘Dreamworld’ tour across the UK and Europe, Tennant and his sidecar bestie Chris Lowe decided to “take stock and bring together every single we’ve released”. The result provides the most comprehensive retrospective of the duo’s work to date.

Songs from all 14 of Pet Shop Boys’ albums appear, along with a couple of popular B-sides.
Strangely, the 1994 top ten hit Absolutely Fabulous is missing, but that may have something to do with the fact it doesn’t contain original lyrics but instead samples from the hit TV comedy series.
Smash will be available in CD format across three discs, vinyl format across six LPs, and as a special 3CD-and-2Blu-ray pack. Which brings us to the videos…
The Blu-ray will see a bumper 66 videos and visuals in total, some of which will feature on Blu-ray for the first time. There’ll even be the inclusion of a few lyric videos – some of songs not even featured on the audio tracklist.
All clips have been remastered which is going to be extra-special to view since visuals are a big thing with Pet Shop Boys.
Here’s to celebrating three-and-a-half decades of making fantastic pop.
