Horror Unmasked: A History of Terror from ‘Nosferatu’ to ‘Nope’ (book review)

If, like us, you appreciate a good horror film, you’d be wise to invest in this here excellent coffee table book.
Horror Unmasked looks at the century-and-a-quarter history of horror movie-making, from the very first (silent) short film The Haunted Castle (1896), through the slasher flicks of the 1970s and ’80s, to modern masterpieces such as Hereditary and The Lighthouse, all manner of sub-genre is studied and heralded.
Heck, even the likes of ‘Child’s Play’ and ‘M3GAN’ make it into this hefty tome, proving that camp and schlock are as respected in the horror genre as blood, thrills and gore.

Author Weismann writes passionately about terror on film, whether he is celebrating the classic monster movies (Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, etc), comparing quality remakes to originals, or dissecting fresh flesh on celluloid.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is one of those classic horrors that often make it into must-see film guides, so naturally it is featured in the very thorough ‘Horror Unmasked’.
While horror titles often feature in those 1001 Movies You Must Watch Before You Die guides, they rarely get compiled into a book as thorough and beautifully bound as this.
Well-researched text and quality film poster art make for great, spooky bed-time reading.
