Boney M announce ‘farewell’ tour of Australia kicking off in Perth next June

Seventies disco staples Boney M will return to Australia next June for their final tour. Aptly dubbed The Farewell Tour and kicking off in Perth on June 4, the band will perform dozens of their hit songs live, including Rasputin, Ma Baker, Rivers Of Babylon, Daddy Cool, Mary’s Boy Child, Hooray Hooray, and Sunny – all with a full live band.

Growing up in the ’70s, it seemed Boney M were everywhere. On the radio, on shows like Soul Train and Countdown, in music magazines, even in TV adverts.

The band’s insanely catchy songs fused the glitz of disco with the deep stirrings of soul music, leading to sales of over 150 million records worldwide.

But what about that odd bandname? Well here’s a fun fact for you: The band’s founder Frank Farian created the pseudonym for himself after watching an Australian television detective called Boney, whose main character was named Bonaparte. Farian said: “I turned on the TV one day and it was the end of a detective series. I just caught the credits and it said Boney. Nice name, I thought – Boney, Boney, Boney… Boney M. Nice sound. Simple.”
