THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

An update on that sequel to ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ – Paul McCartney, Elton John confirmed to feature

Just about everybody who is connected to the music industry has seen, or at least heard of, the mockumentary film This Is Spinal Tap, the first film to have been directed by Rob Reiner.

Following the antics of a mock rock’n’roll band, Spinal Tap, and starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer as members of said band, there were so many references in the movie that today’s rock stars still abide by or relate to. If you haven’t heard of the cult film, turn the volume up to 11 and tune in because a sequel is on its way.

Director Rob Reiner announced yesterday that production of the sequel to This Is Spinal Tap is due to get under way in February next year, and has revealed some big names set to make cameos, including Paul McCartney, Elton John and Garth Brooks.

Guest, McKean and Shearer are set to return as the main members of the band, and the sequel is said to mimic the style of Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz, a legendary concert film that documented the farewell tour of Canadian/American rock group The Band.

Reiner, whose other credits include hit films ‘The Princess Bride’, ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘A Few Good Men’ will reprise his role as ‘Spinal Tap’ film director Martin ‘Marty’ Di Bergi.

News of plans to make a Spinal Tap sequel broke in May 2022, when the project was brought up at the Cannes Film Festival, with Reiner having remarked: “I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one? For so many years, we said, ‘Nah.’ You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honour the first one and push it a little further with the story.”

Expect a roll-call of other cameos to be announced as we head into 2024. This is biblical musical history in the making, after all.
