Slim pickings in Golden Globe nominees following half a year of actors’ strikes

When a film about a plastic doll in which the actors only have to behave like idiots makes it with the most number of nominations for this year’s Golden Globes, you know it’s been a bad year for entertainment. Certainly, the actors strike in Hollywood had something to do with the lack of pickings for this year’s award selection, but Barbie getting the most nominations of all entries, even beating Oppenheimer? Very sad.

While Greta Gerwig’s god-awful plastic doll biopic scored nine nominations, Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ received eight nods. The muchly hyped ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and hotly anticipated ‘Poor Things’ both earned seven nominations.

In television, Succession – a series based loosely on the dramas of the Murdoch family – received the most nominations – nine for its fourth (and final) season, while The Bear and Only Murders in the Building both received five nods.

Television faired a little better with other nominees including The Crown, Fargo, Ted Lasso, and Yellowjackets.

Two new categories have been introduced this year: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures (a category that’s sure to be made redundant in half a decade when we’ve all turned to streaming), and Best Stand-up Comedian on Television (which, with all the Ps and Qs having to be minded these days, should really have just been called the Unfunny Woke Stand-up Award).

The Box Office Achievement award is so reliant on profit statistics that John Wick: Chapter 4 made it into the nominations list, as did a couple of comic book adaptations which – according to old-school Hollywood – are the reason cinema and TV standards are lowering.

Due to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) strike from July 14 to November 9 this year, there was a virtual halt on creating quality product for the big screen. Up until December’s releases (a month in which, finally, some great movies are being released), 2023 looked pretty distressing in cinema.

Television faired a little better, but that’s only because while the older actors striked, the younger talent got to prove their worth (think The Boys, Gen V, Invasion) – still none of these great shows made it into the nominations lists.

The Golden Globes awards ceremony will air live on CBS, US on Sunday 7 January, from 8pm and will then stream on Paramount+.
