ARIA unveils it’s end-of-year charts; not one Australian artist is featured in the Top 40
The Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) revealed its end-of-year charts this weekend and there is not a single Australian song in the Top 40, rounding a dismal year for Australian music in the charts.
In fact the combined total of Australian artists that even made it into the weekly charts last year was only 13, while just three homegrown songs cracked the Top 10 in 2023 and none of these went to number one.
Taylor Swift – who had 36 Top 40 songs in total on the Australian charts last year – saw 13 of these reaching Top-10 status. This is something you’re going to need to wrap your head around.

Other artists that featured prominently in the end-of-year charts were Miley Cyrus (examples: Flowers at number one, and Party In The USA at 69); Post Bloody Malone (egs: Circles and Chemical); Morgan Wallen (Wasted On You, and Last Night); SZA; PinkPantheress; The Weeknd; and everybody’s favourite normie Ed Sheeran.
No sign of Gaga or Ariana Grande this year but then they’d have been too busy with film schedules and product pushing. And there was only one hit by new-big-thing Olivia Rodrigo (‘Vampire’). Not even Aussie artists Kylie Minogue (for ‘Padam Padam’) or Troye Sivan (‘Rush’) made the cut.
Some classic tracks made the Top 40, namely Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams and The Killers’ Mr Brightside (I think we can call it a classic now) adding a certain gravitas to a chart dominated by same-same hip-hop grooves. On that note, why killer track Paint The Town Red by Doja Cat didn’t chart higher than 13 is anybody’s guess.
Again, not much luck on the Australian front, but if you want to check the full charts out here’s the link.
