World Sleep Day: here are three tips to getting much better sleep

Oh humans, we’re such a dozy bunch. So laidback, we even have a World Sleep Day – which happens to be today, in case you were dozing off and haven’t read about it yet on the internets.
Research has shown that 44% of Australians have prioritised better sleep as their top New Year’s resolution in 2024. Still, only 6% reported they wake up feeling well rested, according to a Sealy Posturepedic ‘Sleep Census’.
It appears we’re a nation of sleep deprivation, with the younger population feeling the effects of lack of sleep the most. In fact, 9 out of 10 younger Aussies admit to experiencing sleep problems.

86% of people admit to regularly having their Zzzzz’s disturbed, with 63% of those aged 18-34 having woken up experiencing back pain.

TOP 3 SLEEP TIPS

Energise your morning with a 10-10-10 routine
Kickstart your day with intentionality – take 10 deep breaths to connect mind and body, 10 sips of water for hydration, and soak up 10 minutes of morning sunshine to help regulate your circadian rhythm.

Consider a new mattress
The average recommended lifespan for a mattress is 10 years. The older the mattress, the more likely the sleeper will experience problems and wake up tired. Know when to upgrade your mattress for a better night’s sleep or regular afternoon snooze.

Embrace your daily movement
Create a routine of daily movement that you love. According to the Sealy Posturepedic Sleep Census, 54% of peeps who exercise each day wake up feeling well rested most nights, compared to just 36% of those who exercise just 1-2 times per week. By choosing exercise that you enjoy, you not only enhance your physical wellbeing but also contribute to improved sleep quality. Nigh-nigh, then.
