THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

Two beaut brews from Holgate Brewhouse as part of their 25 Years of Beers series

Aficionados behind beer-devoted websites will tell you they began their online blogging about their beloved beers from frustration of not finding a decent brew at their local bottlo. Fortunately, there are now hundreds upon hundreds of Australian craft breweries that are creating an astonishingly diverse range of styles and flavours – just like we’ve come to expect from wine or coffee.

There’s a great lot of new beers from reputable breweries that ought to impress even the most obnoxious beer connoisseur. Newish to the bottlo shelves are two delicious drops from Holgate Brewhouse: their Millennium Falcon Imperial IPA, and a collaboration between Holgate and Molly Rose aptly called Entwined.

As part of their 25 Years of Beers series this year, Holgate are brewing beers both old and new. Entry number four is Entwined – a collaboration with Molly Rose founder Nic Sandery (who started at Holgate around a decade ago) and led to the creation of the brewery’s first-ever kettle sour, Hop Tart.

This new brew also keeps things nice and tart thanks to it having been blended with specially selected stock ales from the Molly Rose cellar. Add to the mix artisanal malts, European hops and a couple of complex cultures, and you have a beer with real character – spicy, bitter, dry and perfect for the oncoming winter.

Taking a step back in time, beer number 6 is Holgate Brewhouse’s Millennium Falcon Imperial IPA, first concocted in 2013 when it marked their 1000th brew. Made with pale malt, this very drinkable beer is packed with fruity hops bringing to mind pineapple, oranges, lemons and stone fruit. It’s like you’re not drinking a serious beer when you’re actually drinking a very serious one, and you just know a heck of a lot of work has gone into the final sweet, tart taste.

So don’t wait for summer for your craft beer binge. Switch on the lights in the backyard and pretend it’s a nice bright day out there as you crack open a couple of very crafty brews.
