Finally we have a verdict on Margot Robbie’s gin, Papa Salt… and it’s good!

I like gin but it’s got to be a very good gin. Otherwise I end up feeling like Liza Minnelli after a night out at Studio 54 the morning after the night before.
One gin sampled recently has left me with nothing but a lovely taste in my mouth and fun, social memories. At last Friday night drinks, a couple of the Cream magazine crew shared a bottle of Papa Salt: an easy-drinking gin with a burst of native Australian botanical flavours.
Between clinking glasses and researching the gin online, we discovered the good concoction included hibiscus and citrus peel, zesty wax flower and nutty wattleseed from the Australian outback, pink peppercorn, and a hint of mineral in the form of crushed oyster shell.
What?
While that last ingredient had us wondering if we’d end up with a little grit in our teeth, the answer of course was no. Papa Gin, in fact, is one of the smoothest gins I’ve ever had the pleasure of supping.

The product itself is the creation of Margot Robbie and four of her gin-loving friends who dreamt of creating their own spirit with one mission: it must complement any soda, taste great with tonic, and make a mean martini. Fifty-nine recipes, and many joy filled sunny afternoons of gin tasting later, they presented Australians with Papa Salt.
The bottle itself looks like something washed up onto the shore and the message inside is clear: this is one gin you’re going to love.
Papa Salt is available in Australia at Dan Murphy’s, Vintage Cellars and select liquor outlets, and in New Zealand at Liquorland, Liquor Legends, Glengarry Wines and more. For more information, visit papasaltgin.com.
