Get lazy for a good cause! Mito ‘Stay in Bed Day’ in September

Stay in Bed Day is back for 2024 but this year it’s more like Stay in Bed Week, with the charity event happening from September 18-24 this year, allowing you to choose your day to stay in bed.

Coinciding with Global Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week, there’s no better excuse to pick a day to snuggle up in your sheets doing, well, nothing while raising money for a good cause.

Mitochondrial Disease is a debilitating genetic condition that robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure. It affects one Australian child born each week.

For mito patients, staying in bed is not a novelty – it is a harsh daily reality. Show your support and help raise awareness while giving yourself some well-earned time out.

The rules and tips are pretty simple. Pick a day to stay in bed, preferably in PJs, from 9am – 5pm (of course, you don’t have to be awake this whole time – you can actually sleep or nap); eat all meals from bed, occasionally being allowed a 5-minute fresh air break (or to raid the fridge); get plenty of reading in (it’ll make you smarter!); and hold as many online gatherings as you can, preferably with peeps also staying in bed so as to keep them company.

There are other ways to get involved in Stay in Bed Week such as:

01. Invite your local school or childcare centre to hold a PJ Day. Ask parents to make a gold coin donation. The kids will love it!

02. Hold a PJ Day at your workplace. Stay comfy all day in your pyjamas and slippers or hold a morning tea. Or you could charge staff a fee to work from their bed for the day!

03. Hold your own Stay in Bed Day event – a morning tea at home with friends or a PJ Party is a great way to celebrate!

04. Get sponsored to Stay in Bed – curl up with a cup of tea and great book or binge watch your favourite Netflix series! You’ll be sleeping in for a great cause.
