Nemiroff Deluxe Vodka: a Ukraine export that’s well worth supporting

Not that we need a particular excuse to drink vodka, but this is a genuinely good one. Nemiroff is a deluxe vodka brand stemming out of the Ukraine that has only just landed in Dan Murphy’s stores across Australia. In the fairly bad state that the Ukraine is in at the moment, helping out businesses based there is a pretty good idea, so this voddie is a good place to start.

Established in 1872, Nemiroff pays homage to centuries-old vodka-making traditions in the Ukraine, as well as taking on distilling practices that date back to 1872 itself – in the town of Nemyriv. The vodka’s very name is actually inspired by its hometown (incidentally, the town is pronounced ‘Nemy-you’; the vodka ‘Nem-you-roff’).

The product’s makers have harvested wheat fields across the Ukraine, then added purified waters and local botanics, all through a “meticulous” 11-stage filtration process to end up with a finely distilled vodka’s refined and rich flavours.

The vodka is distilled at high pressure and temperature, then laid to rest in oak barrels for three months in order to absorb a woody and spicy air.

This is no ordinary vodka, mind you, offering a crisp and bold profile, with hints of coriander, apple, lemon zest and black pepper. To say it’s got ‘bite’ is an understatement, but that’s when simply sipped over ice.

The Ginger & Lemongrass Martini

INGREDIENTS

60ml Nemiroff Deluxe Vodka

10ml sugar syrup

A slice of fresh lemongrass root

A thin slice of fresh ginger

Strip of lemongrass to garnish

METHOD

Muddle lemongrass and ginger in the base of a cocktail shaker. Pour in the vodka and sugar syrup; shake, shake, shake, then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a lemongrass strip. This is a very simple recipe that’ll leave your tastebuds tingling way after your first sip.
