THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

Top Five Favourite Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

While no one can really tell us when the world’s first doughnut was created, we do know there were very early recipes for fried dough that existed centuries ago. The Ancient Greeks and Romans cooked fried strips of pastry dough and coated them with honey or fish sauce (being of Italian descent, I can tell you, the Romans probably went more for the honey; fish sauce – I’ll save that for my delicious Chinese cooking, thanks).

It’s not surprising that such a pastry has been around for ages since doughnuts are little more than just the right measurements of sugar, flour and water… That is until Krispy Kreme came along in the 1930s.

Founded by businessman Vernon Rudolph, he and his uncle ran a store from 1933, where they hired the talents of French chef Joe LeBeau (literally ‘Joe, The Man’) to create their first “crispy cream” doughnut. The recipe and product were patented in or around 1937 when they took on the sensational brand name Krispy Kreme. And believe me, since this was the period between two world wars, glazed doughnuts created quite the sensation. I’m pretty sure if you were a kid hampering for a treat then, or a soldier recovering from battle, that palm-size circle of deliciously coated dough would have made you very happy.

Fast forward to 2008 and I remember friends packing their suitcases with trays of Krispy Kremes, buying up stores in Sydney to take to family and friends in Perth. The popularity of the great doughnut only soared over the years. When Perth finally did open its first official Krispy Kreme store, it broke the world record for most doughnuts sold on the first day of Krispy Kreme trade (“replacing the city’s unofficial world record for most Krispy Kremes smuggled on to a Jetstar flight” as wickedly reported by The West Australian).

Since then, the folks at Krispy Kreme have looked after Perth peeps, offering them free glazed doughnuts on occasion, most recently the September just gone.

So, I know a bit about this product – in fact I’d grab one on my way to work at Wynyard Station each morning when Cream’s offices were right opposite on Pitt Street in Sydney. And I do like the new varieties of doughnuts the geniuses at Krispy have been coming up with. Hence, you can imagine myself a couple of weeks ago, when I was gifted with a tray of 12 types of Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

So many yummy glazed options! So many delicious fillings! After much deliberating, here are my top five…

Vanilla Slice Doughnut

While a certain version of the vanilla slice is said to have been discovered in a 1651 French cookbook, we Aussies have pretty much made it our own. Krispy Kreme’s version of the dessert, in doughnut form, is generously filled with a smooth vanilla custard, hand-dipped in a velvety white icing and decorated with delicate chocolate ganache swirls, turning a classic favourite into a modern must-treat.

Apple Custard Crumble Doughnut

Taking Krispy Kreme’s Signature Shell Doughnut, injecting it with a delectable apple custard filling, then dipping it in spiced icing and dunking it into a vanilla biscuit crumb. There’s a lot of movement in the kitchen, there, and a lot of rumbling in your stomach, I’m sure, aching to try this delicious doughny.

Choc Hazelnut Doughnut

Take a classic ring doughnut, dip it in an irresistible serving of choc-hazelnut spread, and topped it with a smattering of caramelised hazelnuts. This doughnut is nuttier than a Fererro Roche, even more satisfactory with a café latte or cappuccino. Very Italian on the dessert front.

Kookies ’n Kreme Doughnut

Who’d have thought you could combine three sweets in one? Cookies. Cream. And doughnut. Yum. And why not throw a couple of Ks in there for full branding effect? Krispy Kreme’s Kookies ’n Kreme Doughnut is probably the one out of all their offerings, that has the most crunchy texture. A perfect juxtaposition to a smooth cup of tea or coffee.

Strawberry Sprinkles Doughnut

Oh look why not go old-school with this simple but delicious version of doughnut, stopped with strawberry icing and sprinkles in all colours. Perfect for kids’ parties, or if you want to reminisce your days as a kid, getting away with eating two of these without consequence!
