THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

Documentary on Andy Warhol sheds new light on his upbringing and his influence on art and culture at large

Andy Warhol was as much an enigma as he was ubiquitous. Indeed, few artists are about as well-known as their subjects as Warhol was. Still, there are many aspects to the pop artist’s life that are not known or realised, but an exciting new documentary is set to reveal quite a bit of these when Andy Warhol: American Dream hits the silver screen.

Viewers will be drawn into Warhol’s world through intimate interviews and authentic materials, from his roots in Slovakia to his transformative years in New York City.

With previously unseen material and fresh perspectives, the film sheds new light on Warhol’s introspective nature and his profound influence on art and culture.

The creators of the documentary found an unexplored territory of deep family relationships within Warhol’s family, while Andy’s story is told by people whose statements have never been recorded before.

Part of the film was shot in the country of origin of Andy’s parents, today’s Slovakia, where Byzantine Catholicism used to be strongly rooted. Religion and faith have intensively intertwined with Andy’s life and art, as we can see through the works and interviews with historians and family members. Equally interesting are the shots from his birthplace in Pittsburgh, from his years spent at the Carnegie Tech University, or his first house in New York.

The authors also filmed at the place where he became a victim of an assassination attempt, the hospital where he died suddenly years later, the cathedral of his last farewell or the final resting place in Pittsburgh.

‘Andy Warhol: American Dream’ is on at Luna Leederville + Luna on SX: Saturday 1st March and Sunday March 2nd March at 1.00pm, and on Tuesday 4th March 4 at 11.00am. Sessions can be booked through lunapalace.com.au.
