Believe it or not, today is National Doughnut Day, which is celebrated annually on the first Friday of June. The holiday was established in 1938 by the Salvation Army in Chicago, USA, to honour the women volunteers, known as the ‘Donut Lassies’, who served doughnuts and other comforts to soldiers during World War I. The day also served as a fundraiser to support those in need during the Great Depression. Deep, huh?
Some news that’s a little lighter to handle is that Krispy Kreme is giving away a whopping 100,000 free Original Glazed doughnuts to Australians nationwide today – that’s enough iconic OGs to stretch the length of eight Sydney Harbour Bridges!
