Drink electrolytes for a hydration boost during the coming cold winter months

Winter is a-coming and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. In fact, Australia is already seeing a record number of cases of the flue, and we’ve still got a month and ten days of Autumn to go…

The National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (phew) recently reported that flu cases are already 30 per cent higher compared to the same time last year, with more than 58,000 cases of influenza recorded this year so far.

Aside from the obvious precautions to take – so as not get the nasty bug – such as ensuring you’re well dry after showers or after coming in from the rain – there is one very simple step you can take to help avoid flu: keep your fluids up – especially those containing electrolytes!

Dehydration is a common symptom of the flu, but did you know that Australians lose up to three litres of water a day – even in winter? For this reason, its best to stay vigilant with hydration upkeep.

Add to this the stress of work or getting the kids off to school, the information overload that sees is feeling run down even after scrolling for only an hour, and all the other tensions in everyday life, and a Hydralyte is like an absolute treat in the midst of things, let alone necessary and good for you.

Agrees Brendan Maher of St John Ambulance Australia, “Dehydration isn’t just a summer issue. Staying hydrated is just as important during the colder months.”

Hydralyte’s product range continues to grow, now including the trusty effervescent tablets we’re used to getting our electrolyte fix from, as well as electrolyte powders, and even ice blocks, pictured left, which are a great way to keep the kids hydrated.

My favourite picks? The Watermelon Burst Flavoured Effervescent Electrolyte tablets, and the Pineapple Breeze Flavoured Effervescent Electrolyte tablets are definitely in the top three, rounded out by Hydralite’s Colour-Free Lemonade Flavoured tablets. In fact, I’m loving the latter so much, it’s replaced my allowance of one glass of cool drink a day. Deliciously refreshing.
