Cosplay proved king again at this year’s Supanova Comic-Con

Comic culture, gaming, cosplay and celebrity guests all clashed beautifully at Supanova Comic-Con 2025 held at its usual haunt, the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre last weekend.
Making a welcome appearance at this year’s event were some well-known names, as well as fledgling artists in the realms of television (lots of stream-TV stars), film, comic books, and video games.

A vested interest in popular culture.
Billy Zane was there, donning his trusty grey beret that we’ve been seeing him wearing a lot lately. Zane posed for photographs with fans, as well as signed still photos from his many legendary films. You might recall seeing this guy in The Phantom as the comic icon himself, as well as in Titanic, Tombstone, Dead Calm, Demon Knight, and more recently, Waltzing With Brando. But, hey, did you realise Billy featured in Back to the Future? He appears as Match, one of Biff Tannen’s recurring henchmen and is seen with Biff in both the 1955 and 1985 (alternate) timelines. You see, you learn a lot when you rock up to an event like this!

Also on the star roll-call were The Way of the Mandalore’s Temuera Morrison alongside Star Wars and Once Were Warriors star Rena Owen; Longmire‘s Robert Taylor and Adam Bartley; The Hobbit Trilogy’s Stephen Hunter; and of course Supanova staple and all-round Aussie veteran John Jarrat (he of Wolf Creek fame).

Art the Clown: killing it in the cosplay department.
Events ranged from anime screenings and cosplay workshops to celebrity Q&A panels and the occasional competition. Not to mention plenty of gaming and endless merch stores to muse over and stock up from. I myself scored a very cool model 1958 Cadillac just like the one Freddy Krueger transformed into a killer vehicle in A Nightmare On Elm Street. The craftmanship and attention to detail to this little beauty is phenomenal.
There seemed to be less fast food options this year but more on the showbag front, with Bertie Beetle stand proving as popular here as it is at the Perth Royal Show.

But the bigger stars of any Supanova are the cosplay dresser-uppers themselves, many of which you’ll see below. Enjoy our gallery of cosplay looks, and we’ll catch you at Supanova next year. For now, I’m off to eat some of the candy booty I scored…
