Recovery: Genesis Health + Fitness’ state-of-the-art space where gym-goers can unwind, relax + rejuvenate

These days, people are looking for more than just weights, exercise bikes and treadmills in a gym. Expectations have evolved so significantly, that there are now spaces akin to a gym but not quite within it. Such is the new Recovery space that is now a part of Genesis Health + Fitness in Kelmscott, Perth.

While Genesis gyms are already packed with enough equipment to fill a warehouse – including cardio machines and cross-trainers, rowers, and of course a load of free weights – now the Kelmscott outlet provides VIP clients with an astonishingly impressive recovery centre – aptly called ‘Recovery’ – that takes state-of-the-art equipment to next-level status.

From an infrared sauna and personal infrared lighting booth, to massage chairs and meditation pods, this place looks like a scene out of 2001 Space Odyssey and, once you have headphones on in the meditation pod, for example, feels like you’re out in space, too.

So let’s go through each piece of equipment in the Recovery space while you start seriously considering upping your gym membership to VIP status.

Infrared sauna
Built somewhat smaller than the average sauna, this space fits one to two people and is probably the most ‘traditional’ of amenities available at the Genesis Recovery centre. The sauna is good for muscle relaxation and detoxification while, yes, letting out a little sweat. The good thing about Recovery centre is there are wet wipe dispensers everywhere so you can wipe down each piece of equipment after you’ve used it, keeping it clean and ready for the next patron to use. That said, this place is surprisingly not too busy – since it is a rather exclusive addition to the Genesis gym.

Red-light therapy booth

Now, I’ve tried LED light therapy at cosmetic clinics, and even have an LED face mask at home that I put on occasionally while listening to meditation music. But to have a full mini room to yourself, where you can get down to just your shorty shorts and enjoy red-light therapy head to toe? That’s brilliant (quite literally). Red-light therapy, in case you didn’t know, helps repair cells – both skin and muscular, as well as helping with performance optimisation. It’s the perfect way to unwind and improve your wellbeing after a big workout at the gym.

Meditation pod
This is possibly the most exciting piece of equipment at Recovery and it looks like one of those artistic chairs designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen. He’s not around anymore but, boy, would he have been impressed with this fine apparition. Sit back, slowly bring the pod’s top down, bask in the green glow, and listen to soothing sounds through the provided headset. The meditation pod helps improve mental clarity and stress relief, and personally I didn’t want to get out of the thing!

Massage chairs
These look pretty much like the ones you see at airports around the world. Always good to drop back into one to help alleviate tension and improve circulation.

Recovery boots
Here’s something different to the massage/therapy realm: recovery boots! These big, booty things get strapped onto your legs and are quite literally puffed up to add appropriate pressure to from your calves to your thighs. The stimulation helps boost circulation and reduce muscle soreness. The only trouble with this amenity is that it takes ages to get air into the boots, let alone get them out, ready for the next patron to use. And, personally, I don’t really want to be putting my nude legs into a tight apparatus someone else’s nude leg has been in – so best to wear trackies, folks, not shorts.

Cold therapy bed

This bed is absolute bliss, and provide cold rushes of water (like a more tightly upholstered, sturdier water bed, actually) moving into more lukewarm rushes – depending on how you set it. The change from cold to warm and back helps with inflammation and to soothe muscles. Named the CyroLounge+ this piece of equipment is so impressive, even the repairman says he enjoys lying on it for testing.

IN SUMMARY

Whether new to the gym or a seasoned athlete, Recovery delivers an unparalleled space to restore balance, renew energy, prevent injury, and improve recovery, exercise stamina, and performance.

Recovery recognises that post-workout and wellness solutions are rapidly becoming essential components of the individual fitness journey, and Genesis has incorporated the most cutting-edge equipment all in one place. This is the first of its kind for the fitness giant, marking a new era for the brand’s commitment to a holistic fitness approach.

I truly do feel recovered after trialling all the equipment at Recovery. Not only is my body feeling rested and recuperated, my mind is clearer, too. There really is scientific magic behind the technology here.

I’d strongly recommend you upgrade your gym membership soon, because the Recovery space looks like becoming a feature at other Genesis gyms, too. For now, a trek to Kelmscott is well worth it when there is all of the above to impress you and, more importantly, better your health and wellbeing. Antonino Tati
