THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

Greyhound Racing is now banned in New Zealand: six walk the runway at NZ Fashion Week to promote greyhound adoption

We love New Zealand not only because the nation is a neighbour to Australia filled with beautiful people, and not only for that country’s scenic beauty, but because when New Zealanders have a political mission, they see it right through to the end.

Animal activists will be happy to know that the nation has now banned greyhound racing across the country – a tactic that ought to be taken on by Australia sooner than later.

By this time next year, all greyhound racing will be banned across Aotearoa, allowing 2,500 dogs to be free to go to good homes.

To celebrate the ban, six ex-racing dogs featured on the runway at New Zealand Fashion Week. The six gorgeous, long-legged creatures made the ‘catwalk’ a ‘dogwalk’ for a day, strutting their stuff at Auckland’s Shed 10 in looks by iconic Kiwi designers such as Karen Walker, Trelise Cooper, Nom*D and more.

Behind the initiative is an organisation called ‘Greyhounds as Pets’ who insist that “grey is the new black” as New Zealand faces its biggest ever breed-specific re-homing effort. Basically, there will now be thousands of greyhounds available for fostering and adoption and the good charity business is promoting what great pets greyhounds make.

“Greyhounds aren’t always the first pick for families looking for a new dog,” explained Dawn Glover from Greyhounds as Pets. “But they are incredibly easy to live with – gentle, affectionate, and so deserving of a safe, loving retirement.”

“This is much more than an adoption drive,” added Glover. “It’s about changing hearts and minds, and opening New Zealand homes to thousands of wonderful, retired racers.”

Fortunately, greyhounds are great for home living as they are big on sleep and small on exercise, and are very low-maintenance.
